So proud of myself! I met a lovely 9-month-old cocker spaniel in the park. We got chatting and I told her about the spaniel I was trying to train once to walk to heel. Apparently its a cocker thing that you can get them to walk to heel really nicely, but, as soon as you tell them theyre a good boy, off they go again, like a bleedin rocket! That was when she said hers is exactly the same, and she has had to resort to a choke chain. This doesnt just rattle my chain - I used a choke chain on the first dog I had to train - Barbara bloody Woodhouse was on TV and I was unfortunate enough to pick the one trainer from the local paper who trained with one. She was really persuasive and I knew no better, but she made me do stuff that was really against every instinct in my body. My poor little lovable, biddable dog moved from one abusive home to another! I was later educated when I joined agility training and training became real fun, but there was always that look in her eyes that said whats she going to do to me if I dont do this perfectly? I took her for an x-ray to the vet, because she had terrible digestive problems - spewing yellow bile everywhere. The vet found that her trachea was twisted around her oesophagus. Although she wouldnt confirm it, I always believed that was my fault. Anyhow, luckily, I was able to give her the name of a positive trainer and she is goign to throw away her choke chain! Yayyyyyy!
