So recently Ive been going through my teacher training and theres a lot of focus put on learner types/styles of learning etc. It got me thinking, is this something we consider in the trainer/coach world, or do we just try and do what worked for us as a learner and hope for the best? First of all, theres a few different types we can look at. Weve covered a few models - Kolb, Honey & Mumford (and sons...) and VAK. I wont go over them here, but heres a Wiki link if anyone is interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learning_styles Now, I know when I was going through my PT course, the suggested style boiled down to explain, demonstrate and try for yourself. This pretty much goes alongside the VAK model, with Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic (doing stuff) learning accounted for. Now, 9/10 that will be sufficient, most clients you work with will fall into one of these categories. One day you might find yourself with a client who is struggling to understand an exercise; do you consider approaching it from a different angle, or just sack it off and say well do something else? Theres no real right or wrong answer here. Keep going with different style and it shows you care, moving on if its not working shows you understand that time may be of the essence. Just some food for thought, and potentially an alternative way to develop yourself as a trainer.
