So sad. Ive always been a bit neurotic about car seats for my kids. We used the typical Graco carriers for our infants, but quickly switched to Britax seats. I remember when it was time for Noah to move up once, we bought an Eddie Bauer. I just felt so bad that the next day we took it back and traded it for a top of the line Britax. Noah, because of his low tone, stayed in a special needs Britax with a 5 point harness until after his 8th birthday. Jonah stayed in a Britax until a couple of years ago, and now hes about to come out of his booster, as he turns 8 in March. However, having a great car seat isnt the only part in keeping your children safe. It breaks my heart to see the last picture in this article. Youre doing your children no favors by allowing them to put the straps under their arms or to not sit up as straight as possible in the seats. The belts must go across the lower portion of the pelvis and the strap should be across the chest and over the shoulder. It should always be pulled all the way out, then tightened as much as you can, only able to pinch a slight amount of belt between your fingers. The five point harnesses should have the part that buckles over the chest and even with the arm pits. It should be so tight that you can barely pinch that belt between your fingers. You should be able to put two fingers under, but it should be tight. If youre unsure that youre doing it right, Safe Kids is a great place that will take time to educate and demonstrate car seat safety for free. Also, using tethers is a huge deal. It only takes a few minutes longer and can make a huge difference. Please make sure that youre buckling your kids up properly. I hate to see accidents that could have possibly been prevented by better education. Our kids dont come with an instruction manual. We all do the best we can. If a life is saved from this little girls story, then Im sure that makes her family feel a little better.
