So sad about the news of Robin Williams. Mental Illness is just so - TopicsExpress

So sad about the news of Robin Williams. Mental Illness is just so devastating. As most of you know, our son, Isaiah, deals with mental illness issues and it is an ongoing struggle. Not only is Isaiah affected by it, but our entire family is. I think the part that makes me so sad is there is such a taboo about mental illness and that has to change. So many who struggle are embarrassed to share they struggle with it, yet, someone who has cancer, diabetes, thyroid disease, etc can openly speak about it. So many never seek medical attention, because they are embarrassed or ashamed of it, but there is nothing to be ashamed of. I have been very open about Isaiahs illness and how it has affected our family, because I want others to know it is okay. Isaiah sees a psychiatrist and a counselor and I am not embarrassed by that. I am proud of our son. I am glad God picked me and Jamie to be his parents. Yes, we have days that are very difficult, but we serve a God that will give us the strength we need for that moment and we have had our share of very tough days (yesterday being one of them). We are all dealing w/things and mental illness does not define who a person is, it is a disease like any other disease and is REAL and some people need to take medications for it and others do not, but nobody should be ashamed of it. We need to treat EVERYONE w/kindness at all times. You never know what your kind words may do for someone who is struggling. That kind word or smile may change their day. We also need to make time for others, to listen to them, to hear what they are saying and allow them to say how they are feeling, sometimes that is all a person needs to is to know they have someone who cares and will listen to them. May this help all of us realize just how precious life is!
