So some of you will remember my post recently regarding my diagnosis, whereby I was met by not only my consultant but also a Professor and some colleagues who were intrigued by my diagnosis and haemochromatosis in general, and wanted to discuss my assisting them in a slightly different approach to treatment. My being a compound het, with high ferritin (over 1000) but low saturation, makes for a diagnostic dilemma, and they have various thoughts regarding iron overload being connected to other various factors. They basically want me to lose weight, change my lifestyle and attend conventional blood doning. Anyway I had a letter today explaining a bit more, they want me to take part in a study looking into the connection between gut bacteria (microbiome), obesity and iron overload. Seemingly the most confusing factor for the medical fraternity is why some people suffer from liver disease clearly as a result of iron, and others dont. This may not be new information or even relevant to some but I thought Id share it, and will keep you posted, as I think its really encouraging to see some real desire to understand more about the condition...
