So, some thoughts on another movie I saw today. Yes, I know Ive been talking movies a lot. Thats because Ive purchased a lot recently and I have family in town for the holidays so Ive been watching a lot of movies and breaking from writing. So, I blind bought the film Inside Llewyn Davis. You may have heard of it, you may not have. Ill attach the trailer in case. Why did I blind buy it? Well, first, its a Coen Brothers film. The Coens can do no wrong in my eyes when it comes to film; Fargo, O Brother Where Art Thou, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, Millers Crossing...all masterpieces in my eyes. The second reason I blind bought is that it has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes...its a critical darling. Now, I did hear mixed reactions from people I know personally...but not many share my opinions on film, so there arent many people I take recommendations from. So, what did I think? Well, I really enjoyed it. My mom hated it. I can understand both reactions. First, this a pure Coen Brothers film. Its got very flat affectations, very dry pacing, and a very dry streak of humor. There is NO story arc in this film to speak of. Its very much a strict character study of this guy trying to make a career in music in the 60s with folk songs when folk songs werent popular; it was the time of Elvis. The Bob Dylans of the world were trying to make a name for themselves (theres a really cool little ode to him in the film). The film doesnt have any real resolution. You see this guy struggling, you see the obstacles in his life, and you go along for the ride. It doesnt play out like a Hollywood tale, with a beginning and an end. No, it simply begins and it ends...no real resolution to his problems. We simply know this character better. The journey is very much the point here. I loved the cinematography. This film is beautifully and deliberately shot. The acting is tremendous, especially the way the actors tackle the music with emotional conviction. And speaking of the music, its incredible--T Bone Burnett did a stellar job putting together the songs for, and scoring, this film; if youre a Mumford and Sons fan (the lead singer has a great number in here), or dig the current resurgence of folk music in general, youll really be pleased. I can see how someone could hate this film. If youre looking for a story arc here...for resolution...for a point beyond the journey itself...you wont find it. Ive always enjoyed the individual pieces of a film. Ill see a shot, or notice the way a director combines imagery and music, or the way dialogue is written, and Ill fall in love with a movie; I rarely absorb it as a whole. https://youtube/watch?v=LFphYRyH7wc
