So the CBI says that the Badayun girls were neither raped nor murdered. It says that based on the circumstantial evidence and the fact that no traces of semen were found on the girls bodies, they have concluded that the girls committed suicide. Its bizarre that the CBI forensic reports contradict the initial post mortem report carried out by a local doctor. I dont understand why CBI was in a hurry to close the case. Frankly speaking, CBI is an overhyped organisation in this country. Whenever something happens, we start demanding a CBI enquiry as if their investigators were recruited by none other than the God himself. We overlook the fact that the CBI is manned by the same good and bad people who run our police machinery. We also overlook the fact that the appointments in CBI are political, done to ensure that those in power wouldnt have be embarrassed ever. We also overlook the fact that those manning CBI are also human beings who can be lured by the money-ed and the power-ed to get a report that suits them. In the Aarushi Talwar case, the same CBI first closed the report for lack of evidence and then reopened it under public and political pressure, and then put the blame on Aarushis parents based on circumstantial evidence. I am not yet conviced that the Talwars murdered their own daughter as CBI is yet to establish the motive for murder. Coming back to Badayun case, the CBI officers who investigated the case were appointed to CBI much before the Modi govt took over. The govt had no reason to doubt the officers integrity or capability to investigate the case properly. But now that the CBI report has thrown open certain questions, something needs to be done urgently. It is possible that what the CBI says is true. It is also possible that it is not. So in the interest of justice and to ensure that peoples faith in the investigative and judicial system is not diluted, it would only be proper on the part of the prime minister to ask the home ministry to reconstitute the team of enquiry in the Badayun case. This team can look into the case afresh and establish the truth, this way or that way. Justice must not only be done , but must be seen to be done.
