So the Grammys have decided that these records are the best of the year: Taylors Swifts “Shake It Off.” Meghan Trainors “All About That Bass.” Sam Smiths “Stay with Me,” Sias “Chandelier” and Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCXs “Fancy.” Seriously folks, these are your representatives for the best of American popular music 2014. Mind you I think this years music as been terrible and this list perfectly reflects the truth of this moment, but there is another musical narrative happening in the US and there are nuggets of beautifully crafted pop songs to acknowledge. More on that later. This years Record of The Year Grammy nominations are emblematic of the vast gulf between the lives being lived by the people of this nation and the music that is being promoted to them. This crevasses dimensions are equal to the vast gulf between those who think American society is filled equality and justice, and those who feel the sting of the overseers whip upon their backs: a slavery of the intellect as much as it of the body. All races included. All ideologies present and accounted for in the call out.
