So, the legislature passes the Restoration of the Freedom of Religion Act. Governor has until Friday to sign it. Essentially it gives a person the right not to serve anyone who is not like them in spiritual or religious thought. The government is basically prohibited from prosecuting. Today through Sunday are the most Holy Days in the Christian religion, particularly in the Catholic Faith. I have class tonight. Tonight while I have class, the Church is having Mass and the priest is performing the washing of the feet ritual, an observance of Christ washing the feet of the Apostles. What will the college/government do if I choose to skip class citing the newly passed law? What would the government do if all Jewish employees of the state refused to work on Hanukah, or Muslims refused to work on Ramadan, or anyone refused to serve in the National Guard during a particular Holy Week. Or the state refused (the intent of this law) to recognize a gay marriage performed by an ordained minister. Passage of what I call popularly supported laws that have no real meaning have unforeseen consequences because the popular will says, Oh, that doesnt apply, thats not what the law means. Well let a court decide that. P.S. Im giving a test tonight.
