So..... the lovely Bernie has asked me to write something here about Alyssa and what we are fundraising for. Alyssa is my little miracle. On May 3rd, 2001, she was born joined at the head to her twin sister Bethany. The girls were beautiful and healthy and I was so thrilled to have daughters after 3 boys! A few short weeks later, the girls became very ill and the hard decision was made to attempt emergency separation surgery to try to save their lives. On May 26th, the girls were taken into surgery and 23 1/2 hours later emerged as very sick but very separate little girls. Sadly Bethany died a few short hours later. We were told that Alyssa would not survive either. Luckily for us, someone obviously forgot to tell Alyssa that! 12 years and over 40 surgeries and 100 hospital admissions later, she is a bright, bubbly, cheeky little girl who is the light of our lives. She still has major health issues but she never lets them keep her down. In August 2014, there is to be the first EVER group meeting of conjoined twins and their families. Conjoined twins are very rare - approx 1 in every 200 000 twin pregnancies and craniopagus (joined at the head) are the rarest of all conjoined twins. Alyssa has never met anyone like her and I would dearly love for her to meet others who have travelled a similar journey. One of the greatest gifts a mother can give their child is a sense of belonging and by undertaking this trip, I can provide her with that - a feeling that she belongs somewhere. As a single parent of 4, you can imagine the budget is quite tight so we are fundraising to cover some of the costs. A GoFundMe and FB page have been set up and Bernie has kindly offered to do this Scentsy one for us.
