So the myth of Leprechauns comes from the tales of the Tuatha(a) - TopicsExpress

So the myth of Leprechauns comes from the tales of the Tuatha(a) Dé Danann who were thought to be some of the first inhabitants of pre-Christian Gaelic Ireland(1900-1500 B.C.). During this same time period the Celtic Empire had spread throughout Europe. The legend goes that Tuatha(a) De Danaan were defeated by Celtic peoples(Milesians) who attacked from modern day Portugal. As a result the Milesians were granted the land of above ground and the Tuatha(a) De Danaan were granted the areas under the ground to live(think Hobbits). But they retained magical powers and their size shrank overtime as their legend faded into history. Hence the modern Leprechaun is small, mythical and difficult to understand like the ancient history from which they descend.
