So the opposition decided to walk out of an ad hoc committee - TopicsExpress

So the opposition decided to walk out of an ad hoc committee deliberating on the Nkandla matter. I congratulate them as they can now comment as outsiders than to directly influence the final outcome. Theres nothing unconstitutional when the committee continues without the opposition as demanded by law and in terms of parliamentary prescripts. The overriding constitutional requirement is to form a quorum. Practically, if you appear before a hearing and decide to walk out for whatever reason, it continues in your absence. In other words, youre giving away your right of reply. The Nkandla matter is no exception In essence, if you disapprove of how the committee conducts its business, you note down such irregularities in order to challenge them as opposed to walking out. Its extremely immature to walk out as you cant cry foul at a later stage as you would have forfeited your right to question whatever you would have found to be inconsistent with constitutional directives In simple legal terms, the opposition scored a classic political own goal
