So, the reason why its so hard to record bass noises (like that coming from a neighbors stereo system or subwoofers) is because bass noises are a sound wave frequency. The human ear can perceive sounds as low as 20 Hz. Most normal microphones - especially microphones built-in to cameras and cell phones - dont have the ability to perceive these sounds. The range of sound wave frequencies a device can detect or emit is called its frequency response. So thats why when I lived in Pine Hills and had people across the parking lot playing loud bass-y music, my customers said they couldnt hear anything. (I would actually make up some BS reason for why there might be noise and asked if they could hear it.) I looked up the specs of my Logitech H540 headset and noticed that the frequency response of its mic starts at 100 Hz. Hm... interesting... You can get a microphone that can detect frequencies in the low 20 Hz to 100 Hz range, but they dont seem to be frequently sold at retailers. Perhaps this is because - under normal circumstances - people wouldnt WANT to record lower frequency sounds that might come from the background. (A lot of the products advertise the frequency response of the headsets speakers, which is separate from the frequency response of the headsets microphone.) #audio #acoustics #neighbors #noise
