So the squirrels attacked my beautiful hanging begonia plants on the balcony today...dirt all over the balcony deck, whole plant stems chewed, plants looked like theyve been traumatized. Theyve never done this before and the only problem Ive had in the past are the robins who are always intent on building a nest above the balcony light. A little ammonia in a small tray has discouraged that. I call Mother Millbourne for advice...she advises red pepper around the plant pot and also ammonia in a jar lid. I look online and find the same advice as well as a few other recommendations, I.e. plastic forks in the pot...I can do that; shooting them with a BB gun...not down for that). I tend to the violated plants, rush to Home Depot to buy potting soil and stones to act as a plant cover, stopped at the grocery store for ground red pepper. Back at home, I add potting soil to the plants, place a stones on top and mix a paste of red pepper and ammonia which I spread liberally around each pot. Oh,did I mention I also bought 2 toy snakes & 2 toy lizards which expand with water, to put in each flower pot. DAMN those squirrels....they dont know who they messing with!
