So the torture report was released just the other day detailing the horrific practices the US has used on our enemies. It reflects an absolute lack of sanctity for human life that has become commonplace in our country. Whats worse is that a Pew Research poll shows that 6 out of 10 evangelical Christians support the use of torture. This shows just how opposed the American church is to the way and life of Jesus, and how divorced we are from the early church fathers and founders. That puts it mildly. If you seriously believe that good Christian men and women should support the use of torture on our enemies then ask yourself this: Would Jesus of Nazareth strip a man naked and chain him in a dark room? Would Jesus of Nazareth put a bag on a mans head and pour water down his throat? If your answer is yes, you need to re-introduce yourself to Jesus. This is a man who rejects violence and instead chooses self-sacrifice. If your answer is No, but Hes Jesus, we are not, you need to rethink your theology. You arent Jesus, but He lives inside of you. And if your answer is No, but the peaceful way of Jesus is impractical in todays terms, you need to rethink where your faith lies. Our faith is in the victory of Christ, not in our guns and bravado. In Luke chapter 9, verse 54 the disciples ask Jesus whether they should rain fire down on the city. He responds harshly, You know not what spirit you are of. Unlike the disciples, we no longer need to ask Jesus whether we should rain down fire on our enemies anymore. In fact, we devote billions of dollars to being the best at it. Lets be real here. Jesus doesnt care about our patriotism. Especially when it transcends His mandate and lifestyle of peace. And if Jesus were to stand right before us and we had the audacity as Christians to look Him in the eye and try to justify our torturous ways, I believe His response would be the same. You know not what spirit you are of.
