So there I was in a rest area a long way from home, traveling with two dogs and two children and I saw him. The most beautiful Golden Retriever just running loose. Sarah yells, Theres a stray dog! and I tell her it surely belongs to someone. He ran in and out among the cars and made a bee line for us. Paddy and Peaches were taken by surprise and barked and growled a little but the old Golden Boy made no move to do anything other than wag his tail. My mind was whirling and I was thinking how ridiculous that we should drive up at this place at this time. He hung with us for about 15 minutes as we stretched out legs and walked the dogs. Stuck like GLUE, And I was thinking....where do we put this big boy in the car????? And will Mr. Sweetpups have a fit when I get home (some 500 more miles to go). Oh darn it....its a long way to go with this overgrown dog I know nothing about and darn it!!! So we just hung out while I was watching this boy, knowing I would have to do it. I just couldnt leave him there. No one was looking for him, he wasnt going to anyone as they walked by us for the restrooms, he didnt seem like he wanted to be anywhere but with us. SIGH....I inquired, I walked, I asked, hoping someone knew where he belongs but nothing. And so we began to rearrange the backseat. Paddy in the back with Peaches and the kids and Big boy in the front with me. All things arranged and then the old car came bopping through the rest area, making weird noises and smoking like a chimney.....the dog looked up and the man whistled. He opened the door while still moving along and the dog took off, ran and jumped into the front seat and off they went. I shook my head. Relieved to know he had an owner but totally annoyed at this person who let this beautiful big boy run at will in a rest area. So we made the rest of the journey with only two dogs, casing the rest areas ahead of us before stopping to see if the same old chevy and the same old Golden Boy might be there.
