So there are two big Robin Hood movies in the works in Hollywood. This franchise has been rebooted more times than the Terminator. (And still the best cinematic rendering is the Disney cartoon with the lion as Prince John and the snake as his sidekick Sir Hiss.) But it is remarkable how the outlaw tales have survived from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and are still such a massive part of popular culture today. I recommend anyone wanting to get a flavour of the earliest written stories of Robin Hood (and all the other medieval outlaw tales, including Gamelyn, Adam Bell, Fulk FitzWarin etc) to pick up Medieval Outlaws: Twelve Tales in Modern English Translation, edited by Thomas H.
