So there has been an oped making its way around, published in the NY Post (I know, but seriously I have seen it so many times today it drove me crazy) entitled The Numbers Add Up to One Fact: Cops are a Blessing to NYC. I am NOT debating whether cops are a blessing, everyone can believe what they want based on their own personal experiences. NOW, what I will debate and break down is the illogical logic that this gentleman uses to make his point about the numbers adding up. Hes no statistician and as I tell my friends and followers, stay informed, stay ahead of the game. I am going to take you on his thought process using a different more dramatized example and you tell me if it makes sense or if its a sound argument. There are 7.12 billion people in the world, 5 million children die of malnutrition a year, thats .007 of the population, so since the number is SO LOW, we shouldnt care and its not really an issue and we should all feel blessed that the overwhelming majority of us have food to eat and wont die of malnutrition. I wont give the oped more hits here because I dont promote an anti-everything I stand for tabloid but basically he used numbers and a birds eye view to make it seem that the NYPD is perfect, there are no issues, no need for reform, people of color are complaining for no apparent reason and we should all count our blessings. No nuance, no breaking down numbers by neighborhoods/precincts, looking at all types of excessive force, etc. I am not easily convinced and always ask questions and challenge information that is shared. I hope you do the same. Take everything you read with a grain of salt and do your own homework.
