So there is this controversy about Gal Gadot being cast as Wonder Woman. Probably not a big of controversy as Kyle Cassidys accidental Librarian Controversy but big in certain circles. Recently she posted a selfie of her. Frankly I dont care what a lot of the fan-boys are saying because there has been a LOT of ink/online screen time to how immature many fan-boys are when it comes to women in places like ComicCon and the like. HOWEVER, I am getting irritated about how much of the discussion is hijacked a very basic issue: can an actor (male or female) carry off the *presence* of the part? I feel much of why Ben Afleck is getting bat-flack is people cant see him pulling off the presence needed for Batman. I didnt like most of the Christian Bale Batman movies but he certainly had the Bat-Presence down. I think there are two valid critiques against Gal Gadot. The first is the above; while 59 she lacks the presence to pull of WW. Linda Carter managed it but that was before years of Lucy Lawless playiing Xena because I think in most peoples mind, thats what we expect of WW today. Not a tight fighting spangled outfit and big boobs. Now we expect a woman to look like she could stand up to Christopher Reeve. (I feel no one has pulled off Supes since Reeve) This isnt a gender thing. I didnt think Chris Helmsworth was going to pull of Thor but he managed it so maybe Gadot will do the same. However I think shes in the same boat with Hayden Christensen. She lacks the physical size to make us believe shes WW just as Hayden just couldnt sell the idea he was going to grow up to become David Prowse. The second thing against her is I believe that she got the part mostly because shes a hot property in Hollywood. I frankly detest how Hollywood cant seem to take chances on underutilized actors or unknowns. No, theyd rather keep recycling actors. As Ive complained about many times, couldnt Hollywood find ONE German(ic) actor to play the Red Skull? I love Hugo Weaving but hes Australian! Was Jurgen Prochnow last Germanic actor; theres just none left? Anyway, I think that the fan discussion on her casting is being hijacked by people accusing of body-shaming Gadot. Its not body-shaming to say one is of the opinon she lacks the physical prsence for the role. Hell, I cant think of ANY actress off the top of my head other than Lucy Lawless to play the part. Im sure theyre out there. In fact, youd think the need for 62 or so women would be few and far between so a role like WW would have them clamoring for the role.
