So there seems to be a lot of back-and-forth about Reza Aslan and accusations of Islamophobia, etc., with Reza and co. insisting that the barbarities of ISIS and co. are not muslim problems but regional/cultural/social problems. IMO, the question is not whether one muslim country is better or worse than another muslim country, but are muslim countries better or worse than non-muslim countries? For example, lets look at just one dimension of the issue: DEATH FOR APOSTATES. It doesnt really say much of anything that in Indonesia, the most populous and one of the more moderate muslim-majority countries, only 6% of the population thinks its acceptable to put people to death for leaving the religion. The really revealing insight here is that muslim countries, to one degree or other, do not recognize what westerners would consider fundamental freedoms of conscience and expression, and they believe, to greater or lesser degrees, that its acceptable to punish people who exercise those freedoms with STATE-ORGANIZED MASS MURDER. Now, how exactly is that NOT a muslim problem?
