So there we were, just six humans with 15 dogs at the Chants football game. The dogs were totally cool with fans screaming, cheerleaders tumbling, tubas playing, drums thundering, and bleachers full of people stomping so loudly that they sounded like an oncoming freight train. No problem. The Chants mascot, a fuzzy, teal, talking bird, at least 6-feet-tall, comes flying off the field and lands in the center of the pack. The dogs don’t so much as flinch. No problem. But then the real chanticleer appears. A CCU student with a live rooster (OK, a chanticleer) on her arm draws near. The dog handlers’ eyes widen in panic: “Get that chicken out of here!” they plead. “No closer, please.” As hard as we train for every occasion, the pack has not met a live chicken, rooster or chanticleer up close and edible. We were hoping to avoid the morning headline: “CCU Mascot Meets Canine Angels. New Chicken Wanted.” That might have been our last invite.
