Botswana National Front (BNF) President Duma Boko says he has declined a lucrative P40 million offer to join the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). Speaking to The Voice after officially opening the party’s 16th National Congress in Ghanzi on Saturday, Boko said the P40 million carrot was dangled before him to entice him to join the ruling party but he rejected the offer with the contempt it deserved. “I was approached by various people from the BDP telling me I could be useful to their party. They came at different times persuading me to join them,” he said. Boko further went on to allege that after turning down the mouth watering offer some businessmen within the BDP and their foreign partners approached him and asked him to name his price. Refusing to divulge any names Boko claimed that BDP big guns proposed to setup a business for him and he still refused to join their party. When The Voice asked how much he would accept to join the BDP, Boko said; “Not even a P100 million, I will not accept that because I am dedicated to the BNF and I am against BDP policies.” He said he was not driven into politics by hunger but by the desire to improve the lives of Batswana. In response to Boko’s allegations, The BDP’s Acting Executive Secretary, Lee Lesetedi said that the party is indeed engaged in a national recruitment drive but dismissed the monetary offer as false claims. “Everyone in the BDP has been given the mandate to recruit members into the party but the issue of us buying members is a political propaganda by people who do not know what to say about us anymore.” Lesetedi said that it wouldn’t make sense spending that ‘kind’ of money’ to recruit Boko when there are other projects that require funding. Asked if they did not approach Boko, Lesetedi said that just like any member of the opposition, Boko is wanted by the BDP. “We want him to join us but we will not buy him as he alleged.” Meanwhile, addressing the BNF elective congress delegates Boko talked of how the BNF has been enjoying stability and calm since the Mochudi congress in 2010. “In fact the party distinguished itself by remaining focused on the goal of attaining opposition unity and avoided all pitfalls of what had in previous talks been called the Big Brother mentality.”
