So theres this classmate I have who takes special care in calling professors for cancelling special classes, who never came to the protests while we shouted our lungs out to secure our demands; leave alone any solidarity, he didnt even bother to find out how things went. I have nothing personal against him. But what is alarming is how electoral democracy permits these people to shamelessly run after power. The Students Faculty Council of the Department of English, University of Delhi is a result of a rigorous collective struggle- several students came together to invest their passion and energy in achieving for themselves a democratic space within their department. Prateeksha Pandey, tirelessly, as Ive seen her, worked her arse off in typing that extra letter, in answering every debate, in taking a lead role in uniting both the campuses during our struggle. She was a part of the delegation team that negotiated with the Dean of Arts. Throughout the course of events Ive never seen her rest for a while, or compromise with her job and academics, for that matter! Souradeep Roy, my erstwhile roommate, a brilliant poet in his own right, not only did he echo his thespian voice to the slogans that were raised in the agitation, not only was he another member of the delegation- he remained among of the ones who worked relentlessly to make the Reading Conflicts - Department of English Students Seminar a reality. He wrote the concept note that kept many of us charged and wondering, he presented a thought provoking paper himself, he devoted several days and nights in being a part of its organizing committee. South Campus has always been at the rear end of neglect. The ones I mentioned among many others shattered the myth that second grade students are enrolled in South Campus colleges. They intend to raise the demands and problems essentially of South Campus in the SFC meetings if you elect them. Ill be voting for them on 5th November with the hope of improving the learning experience in South Campus so that the students do not have to come all the way to North. What will be your choice?
