So there’s this survey by MSF on how 85 per cent of parents with teenage children or younger were satisfied with their relationship with their children as well as with their family life. TODAY gave this background on how MSF’s findings come after the Samaritans of Singapore’ suicide figures showed a greater proportion of youth suicides and how this pointed to a “general disconnect” youths felt with their families and a lack of effective communication between family members. Report continues: Yesterday, family counsellors and advocates TODAY interviewed said the figures do not suggest a gap in parents’ understanding of their children. But they acknowledged that there are still conflict areas and noted that more studies need to be done to assess how children feel. Hmm. Survey is of PARENTS. Not of the kids. Not sure if the suicide background should have been shoe-horned in. And what does the phrase “figures do not suggest a gap in parents’ understanding of their children’’ mean? This is the trouble...when results are hunky-dory, we try to make sure we don’t say anything more contradictory/controversial beyond the “room for improvement’’ cop-out clause.
