So this afternoon I visited the Collard Lady to pick up my collards and sweet potatoes at the appointed time. When I walked up to the back porch, there was this old gentleman sitting in one of the rocking chairs and he told me she was out in the field picking his collards so I sat down in the other rocker beside him and struck up a conversation about her collards, how he cooked his collards, what did he cook them with, did he freeze them, how to reheat them, etc. Me being the observer I am, I knew right off the bat he was most likely a widower as his wedding ring was still on his finger but on the other hand instead. Then we started talking about dumplings and he told me exactly how he made his. That reminded me that that I had nary stitch of corn meal at home and that needed to be remedied asap (and was). It wasnt but about 15 minutes we spent together on the Collard Ladys back porch, rocking to an awesome conversation, but I sure did learn a lot from this old gentleman, mainly how appreciative he was of someone (a perfect stranger) taking the time to learn his ways of doing things. The Collard Lady soon returned with his collards, he paid her, picked up his bags and politely refuse my offer to help. I thanked him for sharing his knowledge with me and told him how much I enjoyed our conversation together. He stopped, turned around, looked me straight in the eye and said, I did, too. With that, he loaded his produce and left. He was interesting and I was interested and we enjoyed a few moments of old-timers versus baby-boomers. Judging from his demeanor, he seemed genuinely glad about our conversation. Me? I was tickled pink to have the perfect instructions on collard cooking with all the trimmings! It pays to listen to old folks. They dont live this long without having a lot of knowledge about a lot of things. :-)
