So this belief of Mother Teresas that poverty is a gift from God, - TopicsExpress

So this belief of Mother Teresas that poverty is a gift from God, is not limited just to her or to those who share her faith. Its an idea held by many today. Recently, I got into a heated discussion with an acquaintance of mine as she was packing up, preparing to jet over to one of her vacation homes. Those who are suffering in this life, she told me, are doing so as a gift, to teach empathy to the rest of humanity. Their struggle is a part of her journey. Its a philosophy that brings her a great amount of peace, and walks hand-in-hand with, just trust the universe. It also opens the door to entitlement. In his book, A Thousand-Mile Walk to the Gulf, John Muir writes, “The world, we are told, was made especially for man — a presumption not supported by all the facts.” Its a delicate, thoughtful walk, isnt it? Navigating that line between believing that all that was meant to be will be versus settling into self-indulgence and complacency as we go off to connect with ourselves and find inner peace, leaving the rest of the universe to sort things out for itself. (With a thank you to poet/activist, Sam Hamill, for drawing my attention to this recent article on Mother Teresa: independent.co.uk/voices/iv-drip/academics-suggest-hitch-called-it-right-on-mother-teresa-8521363.ht_)
