So, this is an internal cue, one that I dont think works well in the long run because it asks to you falsely activate the lats as opposed to setting the tension automatically to match the task (#tensiontotask). Thinking about muscles ruins coordination. She uses better internal cues in this video like long arms Any ideas for an external cue? At the end, she uses one - brush the bar up but that is for something different. An external cue is external to the body - manipulating an object for example. Internal vs external cue - internal would be fully extend or triple extension. External would be imagine you have a dunce cap on. Jump to touch it on the ceiling. The words gets less and less as you begin to get the idea such that simply jump would trigger the motor pattern Internal cues are wrong but there are certainly better ones than activating a muscle. In general, thinking about a muscle activation is worse in results. Try this: in standing or sitting, just raise your arm straight in front of you. Then use your other arm to pull down on it. You should be able to hold the pressure without any trouble. Now repeat the test but before you pull down on the arm, tense the arm hard knowing that you will be pulling on it. Maybe try shoulders up, back and down. Maybe tense your core. Try different activation cues. You should find that it isnt as easy to hold the arm up. You can try front raising a weight or have someone pull down on your arm. Your brain just needs to know what you want. It can activate what you need. If you want to touch your nose, you dont think activate the biceps 2%, bend the elbow 85% etc etc. Lifting a barbell is no different. Therefore, know what you are looking for - in the video, Sage Mertz tells us that the person was rounding the shoulders and tipping forwards...which is basically losing the setup position. The resulting activate lats cue is just one of many. Finding the right one is a matter of experimentation.
