So this is the power line on our block tonight, between Diamond/Portland and 12th to 13th street. The lines were glowing so red-hot that I thought it was a neon light or some sort of red tube light from the opposite side of the block. It was on fire, smoking and could be smelled a block away. A police copter was sent to be sure no homes were burning. The fire department blocked off the street to protect cars. About 20/25 minutes into tonights awesome episode APS decided to grace us with its presence. The transformer blew last week, causing the power to go out between 9:30-2am. A few months ago the transformer before the aforementioned one blew out, and before that it caught a few homes on fire. Children live in the house under this line. Homes with children reside in the homes these poles and power lines serve. Is this not what bills are for? Youd never see power lines like this is almost any part of the valley, yet my neighbors and I are forced to flee our homes several times a year in search of respite while APS hopes it can repair faulty equipment with a few odds and ends replacements. All while paying my bills on time which charge me a pretty fair amount for system benefits federal transmission services and a delivery service charge in the hope that Ill actually have continuous power that is serviced appropriately. Ive never gotten an update from them during a situation like this, an apology nor do they care to answer my calls when reporting something so dangerous. Tonight my power was off for just an hour. It all seems like a small modern inconvenience until you consider that last week it was 99 degrees outside with 60% humidity, on homes that are mainly evaporative cooled with single pane windows and incredibly historic insulation. How long until ANOTHER old home sparks or some dead weeds and trees ignite? Will Someone please bring this up at the RED meeting tomorrow? I cant be there due to work.
