So this is what an atheist did today. Im reposting a friend of mines account of what could be a bad night for a few people, had it not been for the intervention of my friend. Shes a fellow heathen in Tulsa, and not so well to do as most of us arent, but that didnt stop her from helping people who needed help. Out of respect for her privacy, Im not posting her name but leave a comment or Like or whatever for her here. Also, if youd like to be her FB friend, leave a comment pertaining to that and shell see it and seek you out possibly. This. Is. What. We. Do. Coming into town from my training, I pass a woman and two kids broken down on the side of an exit ramp with the windows down. I slow down and ask if they need help. Shes upset. Theyve been there 2 hours, no one has stopped or even slowed down. She thinks she needs a jump. I say okay. My car is new, I have no cables. I go to Walmart. I tell her Ill be right back. Im standing in a fast check out line for 11 minutes with jumper cables. I go to the front to see whats going on. (Im nosey) There sits an elderly man, in a wheelchair, alone, trying to price match some grapes. They said his ad was expired. He was doing the math to decide to put some groceries back or not buy the three tshirts he wanted. I laid my cables down and said add this on there. The man looked upset, then I swiped my card. He cried. The cashier asked whats wrong. He said I dont know this woman. The cashier cried. It was kind of beautiful. I get the cables and give the man the receipt. I get back to the woman and her kids. The car isnt starting even with the jump. Im no mechanic, but it appears to be the fuel pump. Its after 9 by now. Shes upset because she works nights and shes going to end up missing work. This is the first week of school. She just picked up one of her kids friends for a sleep over and the car broke down. Shes lived in Tulsa two years. She came here because her father was dying. He passed away. This is his car, she cant get rid if it because its got so many memories. She doesnt have anyone to call. I asked how far away she lived - 3 miles. I call a tow truck. I told her it would be free for me and not to worry. We stand and talk while we wait. She tells me her whole life story. She has over come obstacles as a single mother. The truck gets there. I pay for it. (I get a hefty discount) She says Thank you and gives me a hug. I put a $100 in her hand. She cries. I tear up. She said I dont know your name. She said shell pay it forward when she gets back on her feet. She left with the kids in the tow truck. I went to Taco Bell. I deserved it. I finally made it home. And Im not doing the ice bucket challenge. This was far more rewarding. #communityservice #upsince5 #humanity #payitforward #immaneedaloan
