“So this is what you do all through the day and night, Mr. Hardwick?” Elle greeted above the rhythmic clank and clatter. “It is indeed! And what were you doing before disturbing my toil within Sundark’s organs and bowels?” he said. “Knitting?” Coal fell tumbling down a chute. Mr. Hardwick leaned the great wrench against a pillar, took up a shovel, opened the grate to a boiler’s fire, and began feeding it. “Even while knitting I am detecting, Mr. Hardwick,” Elle said as she came beside him. She removed the cloth covering the basket and showed him the contents within.
