So, this whole thing about The Washington Redskins. I agree there are bigger problems facing our country, and even facing football, probably. But it IS a racial slur. Redskins, apparently refers to trophies taken by Indian hunters to prove they had killed Indians...its not just a name for the wrongly supposed color of their skin. Its a racial slur. And our country is built on the genocide of those people. Thats why Native Americans are depicted as savages in early western movies, to dehumanize them for the sake of our national conscience. The analogy thats often made is it would be like calling a team The New York Darkies ...that would analogize to the color of the skin remark...but being a racial slur, and the first I heard, the analogy was to The New York N-Words -- youll notice society, and probably Facebook, wont even let me TYPE that word, even tho thats NOT how I first heard the joke. But that suffering class was actually slaves, the other tragedy and great crime our nation is built on. That was less of systematic genocide anyway. So those analogies are just a little bit off as far as the tastelessness of having a team named for an ethnic slur against a class we slaughtered, stealing all they had. Were looking for...a genocide, a capitol of its perpetrators and an ethnic slur here. The closer analogy would a Berlin soccer team called The Dead Kikes. Thats about how offensive it must to Native Americans. So thats how problematic it is to me. If there shouldnt be a team of that name in Berlin then there shouldnt be Redskins in Washington. And then...give them their land back maybe, or keep ONE treaty, for starters.
