So tired of walking away from a service for children with special needs crying because people are ignorant!! I went to put in an application for head start for Oliver. I dont know why I expected the director to be any less ignorant than the last head start... We walk into the classroom where the teacher/director was with another parent doing enrollment orientation. The kids immediately started playing in the classroom. The teacher/director handed me an pre-application to fill out while I wait. She waited till the other mother left to tell me this: Her: could you bring them back over here. I dont want them playing with everything we are still getting set up. Me: oh...they have autism and are not going to understand why they suddenly cant play with these things. (I have worked for head start for 13 years. She just didnt want them making a mess. There was no reason for them to not be able to explore the classroom while I fill out paperwork. That is how I have always done it in my classrooms. Why put toys in front of a child and say dont touch!?) Her: maam they are not the only ones with autism. I have had kids with autism. They need to come over here. (She tried to say it in a sweet voice but I just heard ignorance) Me: (I put the application down) wow, I dont want to fill out this application after all. Her: thats your choice. I remember you told me you had trouble with a school district teacher as well. Just think its not everyone else. (Pretty much said I am the problem) I got the kids gathered and left. Cried in the car. Its just sad that I really need to get used to this because not many know and understand autism unless they live it. She could have said that she did not want me to bring the kids to fill out the application. If you want to know about the other teacher I will post about that craziness again. Long story short an ESY teacher quit her summer job rather than be nice to me and my son and she is also supposed to be his teacher this fall. He is being transferred to another campus. Thinking about calling the head start back and letting them know how I feel and letting her supervisor know what happened...what do you think? :(
