So to all my White friends, community members and allies, I hear your desire to express yourself and to be a part of the solution. Please remember that sometimes the most radical thing an ally can do is remain silent, to allow Black people to lead. Sometimes the best way to insure that All Lives Matter is give Black people room to own a space, to be surrounded by (mostly) fellow Black people, to yell, to scream, to cheer, and to sing. Give us our space to mourn. For as much as it cuts to hear my young people say Im numb, Im scared, and Theyre killing us, this isnt a fraction of a percent of what they are actually feeling. I know that I cannot even begin to fathom. But I can and I will co-create space to listen and bear witness to their thoughts, feelings, sharp inhales, tears. I will show up, tell them that they matter, tell them that theyre beautiful, tell them that I love them and are worthy of every dream they harbor, and then I will remain silent as step one to undo racism. Show up, step down.We must learn to listen, to be respectful, to be humble.
