So, today I rode the Dakota Rail Trail all the way to the end of the line at New Germany, about 75 miles round-trip, which was more than I had bargained for. The trail is straight, flat and smooth and, mercifully, mostly runs through a tunnel of trees because the old rail corridor has not been cut since the first track was laid in the 1850s. It winds through the comfortable lakes cities of Wayzata, Orono, Minnetonka Beach (my fav), Spring Park and Mound before heading into farm country. I stopped in the small town of Meyer to recharge. My reward at home was a protein shake with blueberries, bananas and lots of chocolate syrup -- and a handful of Advil. To my surprise, I didnt feel too bad afterward. Three Rivers Parks did a masterful job of getting this path through the lake cities, overcoming quite a bit of opposition from the residents. They also have these nice trails-side maps and directional signs. My other photos are stuck in my cell phone forever, it seems.
