So today began........with a thunderstorm! This made for a great talking point at Introduction and allowed us to bring our Letters and Sounds (Instrumental Sounds) to the carpet beautifully. Beginning with a small selection of musical instruments (egg shaker, drum, bells and tambourine), we listened carefully to the sounds that each of them made. They were then played from behind a screen, meaning we had to really listen to the sounds before trying to identify which sound came from which instrument. Following this we sang the I Hear Thunder song. I (Zoe) had the glamorous job of secretly trying to hide myself away at the opposite end of the room with a selection of instruments, ready to add some instrumental sound effects to the song as a surprise for the children! As soon as I banged my drum (the thunder) and shook my egg (pitter patter raindrops) the children intently tuned in, mesmerised by my instrumental rendition ( :-/. ) from behind the story sack rail ;-) When questioned about these sounds they were quick to identify what they had heard. Great job! The morning then commenced and before we knew it the craft table was filled with children requesting sparkles and runny glue after deciding amongst themselves that today they wanted to make hats! There were some pretty amazing results I have to say, and many children left today donning some designs that Gok Wan would have been proud of........and they werent the only ones! George also had a fabulous headband designed and created just for her by one of the children too (see previous post pictures) :-) As mentioned in earlier posts, we have received an order of lots of new maths equipment and today we looked at a late delivery that had arrived.........metre rulers! We demonstrated how we can use these, together with other methods of measure such as our new retractable tape measures and number lines etc to measure length, height, width etc. We introduced lots of mathematical language to the discussion such as tall, short, long, longer, higher, lower, wide, small, big and even units of measure such as centimetres. We then left these measuring aids out for the children to use independently. Throughout the day myself and the rest of the staff have been regularly height checked, not to mention everything (INCLUDING the kitchen sink) has been measured in height and width :-) The playdough has been out again and this is so valuable in helping to strengthen all of those muscles that are required to aid our future pen control and other fine motor movements. Stories have been shared and todays hit was most definitely Little Rabbit Foo Foo. We have also watched the story on The iPad and for those of you that are not familiar with it, you can check it out here..... m.youtube/watch?v=1cOT4T2jDho The Lego and Duplo have both been heavily used today and I have to say.........what a fantastically creative bunch we have! The imaginative creations produced over the last week have blown all of us away :-) This afternoon a Duplo train was made by some and brilliant imagination led to this being used to transport the coloured bears one by one over to the coloured bowls, before being dropped off into its corresponding coloured pot. This required time and a good attention span so was really fantastic. A good day had by all :-) Todays polite reminders :- Please ensure that children come to preschool dressed in clothing that they are able to manage easily when using the toilet. Please ensure that all snack is labelled. There are sticky labels in the snack box that can be used for this if needed.
