So today is World Toilet Day. Sounds like a joke, right? Its not (as most of us in Canterbury post-earthquake can attest). The toilet – a small but fundamental part of every-day life, wherever you live in the world. Seldom do we pause and think how much we rely on having access to a decent toilet – how it enables us to go to school, work, rest and play; how it preserves our dignity and privacy; and offers us a quiet space and time for reflection. 2.5 billion people do not have access to proper sanitation, including toilets or latrines, with dramatic consequences on human health, dignity and security, the environment, and social and economic development. 1 billion have to defecate in the open. The theme for this years World Toilet Day is Equality and Dignity. Some of the aid agencies Im working with are doing tremendous work providing safe, equitable and dignified access to sanitation services through development and humanitarian programs.
