So today, we went on a lovely train journey. We have been told by expats and Turks that the trains are rubbish, almost non-existent and generally very poor. Well for a start to dispel a few myths. There is a railway station at the Airport in Izmir with a service from Soke. Only 3 times a day but a service. The network is being increased with many new stations being added. A new station was recently added to the network at Sazlı and at least 5 more in the construction phase between Soke and Izmir. The price of a one way ticket from Soke to Izmir was 10TL and takes a little over 2 hours with one change of train at Ortaklar. Whilst there was not a buffet car on the train there was an independent simit seller with simit (1Tl), water (1TL), ayran (1TL) and fruit juice cartons (unknown). The station in Izmir is Basmane and is within 250m of the big park. We went up on the 10.35 and came back on the 16.30. Really enjoyed the day and again proved that things are not always exactly what they initially seem. The high speed network is currently being put in. As an example the 10-hour-30-minute travel time between Ankara-Konya will reduce to 1 hour 15 minutes.
