So, trying to decide if we should go pheasant or grouse hunting - TopicsExpress

So, trying to decide if we should go pheasant or grouse hunting today, and started looking at the release map from the DWR. To my surprise, there were two areas that happened to be right near where I have always had my best grouse hunting. Current Creek WMA, and Strawberry River WMA. So we get up and drive up to the closest one first. Wildcat Unit of Current creek. After driving up the road for at least 30 minutes, saw NO terrain that seemed likely to hold pheasants, and no indication of where the hell they had released them at. SO, back down the road and up to the Strawberry unit. Down that road past the pallisades/pinnacles and clear the hell up to the WMA. Found several fields that looked like they might theoretically hold pheasants, then started hitting big hills and sagebrush. SO headed down and hiked the fields. Not one damn bird, not one SIGN of one bird, no evidence that a pheasant had ever been within 50 miles of the place. SO gave up and went up Current Creek canyon after grouse. Hit 4 of my favorite spots, hiked through a couple dozen acres of pines and quakies. Saw exactly ONE squirrel, no grouse, and nothing else of interest. Didnt even see any deer or such today. SO 225 miles/$100+, and 8 hours of driving and hiking and we didnt even fire our guns. Sadly, this has been a pretty typical day so far this year. I used to just go drive wherever and shoot stuff. Now I put THOUSANDS of miles a year on my vehicle Hike the soles off my boots, and shoot NOTHING, or at least very little. Is it just me, or is everyone having this problem to a lesser or greater degree?
