So, turns out I pay over 500 GBP a month to the University of Oxford to get cooked alive in a single room near a train station without air conditioning. Makes me think that the best thing to happen is have the Port Meadow association win their case and have the buildings destroyed. At least then it will be cooler. Instead, here is their hilarious attempt at damage control... Dear Resident We would like to thank you for your patience while we have been carrying out further investigations into the conditions at Castle Mill. As stated in our last email our Building Services team, contractor and consultants have carried out an investigation into the causes of the overheating. I hope you will appreciate that Castle Mill is a modern and very well insulated building, which means that any solutions implemented as a result of the investigation may take time to have an effect, as it will take time for the building to cool. A number of solutions have now been identified. The contractor has modelled the heat load of the building and ran a number of scenarios to determine the most effective solutions to reduce the temperature to a more comfortable level. The results of this investigation revealed that by far the most effective is to remove the window restrictors, which I understand has already been undertaken in the case of some non-family accommodation. Although temperatures are still high, the removal of the restrictors will have a noticeable effect over time. If you are not in family accommodation, and the restrictors on your windows have not been removed, please inform your caretaker who will arrange for this to be carried out as soon as possible. I am pleased to confirm that a number of other works are now planned for Castle Mill that will further help to reduce the temperature. The first of these is to provide insulation in bathrooms that have showers with exposed pipes. Our thermal contractors will confirm a date to start the work early next week. We will begin this work with the worst affected rooms, and ensure that those rooms currently occupied receive attention as a matter of urgency. The next phase of work involves a number of solutions which may include reducing the riser temperature, improving the glazing performance and improving the ventilation in the corridors and stairwells. Our contractor and Building Services team are currently exploring which combination of solutions would be the quickest and most effective. The contractors and specialists will be visiting Castle Mill again next week to decide how this will take place. We will keep all residents updated on the progress of the work. We understand that conditions are still trying for residents, and we have ordered more fans for those residents who are still uncomfortable. We will let you know when these arrive. If you have purchased a fan at your own expense up to £50 we will reimburse you for the purchase. Please contact ______ in the Finance team at [email protected] for further details. We will contact individual residents shortly to advise when we plan to lag their pipes and arrange for access. If you have any concerns about the work scheduled to take place please let us know. In the meantime please continue to send your feedback and tell us if you are noticing any improvements. We have passed all the information you have sent to our contractors to aid in their investigation, and will continue to do so while the problem still exists. Please be assured we are continuing to take your concerns very seriously and we are doing all that we can to improve the situation. We will make further information available about the work that will take place as soon as we can. Best wishes The Graduate Accommodation Office
