So unfortunately or fortunately for those this resonates with (fellow artists) this is going to be a rant . . . I am a professional photographer. What this comes down to is . . . this. is. my. livelihood. Inviting us casually to your parties or what not and then expecting us to bring along our cameras - NOT FLIPPIN COOL. For me this is the quickest way to question the authenticity of our friendship and connection. I realize this job seems glamorous and fun and yes, there are a lot of parts that are those things, however, it is HARD work. We are already culling and editing 1000s of photos. We carry large amounts of gear on our person. Its no coincidence that Im a yogi. It manages my pain. We are also then responsible for the large sum of money that is also on our bodies that could very possibly be worth more than your car. Its not like we can now just relax and kick back and have a few. We continue to have the immense responsibility of babysitting our gear. On top of all that we dont work normal schedules and there is rarely a day we arent doing something related to this job. Our time for our families and personal lives is already limited. Giving the impression that you want to take advantage of our talent and time isnt cool dude. There are times that I gift my photography but those are by personal choice. It could be a cause Im passionate about or an extremely close friends big life event or even something I think is stupid fun that Id like to collaborate on. All I ask is to please be mindful and respectful to those of us who work in the arts of any sort or any entrepreneur for that matter. There is value in what we do and what we are creating and assuming that we will do this for free is telling us instantly that you dont respect that value.
