So we didnt make it too far. We were making great time and she was eating up the miles. She was purring like a kitten between 55 and 65 mph. The kids had to go to the bathroom and we were at a 1/2 tank so we thought what the hey, lets pull over warm up a bit and get gas. I topped the tank off, checked the fluids (all good). Heck I even cleaned the windows. We pulled out and it was running a bit rough. Polly wouldnt go above 55mph, then wouldnt go above 50 then 40 then 30. She started backfiring. We were finally able to pull over and take a look. I noticed the temp gauge was up a little so I thought that maybe I was experiencing vapor lock. The heater hose runs right over the top of the fuel filter so this is plausible. So I made up a jerry rig spacer out of a leather welding glove and some wire. We went down the road, but the same thing happened. Loss of power and increased temperature. This time we pulled off and removed the fuel filter. The outlet had a lot of pressure built up. It is a clear filter and after it was removed there was some obvious sediment in the bottom. I installed my spare fuel filter thinking we were set to head out. Nope, no better. It acted like there is another filter that is plugged, but there is only one filter in the system. I went down some back roads and finally found another place to pull over, only after stalling out in the middle of a highway, really scary moment. I pulled the inlet out of the carb thinking that there was a screen there and again there was a lot of pressure on the outlet of the filter. I found a needle like valve in the inlet of the carb. Ive never seen anything like this, but all I can assume is that it is supposed to move, but is not causing fuel starvation which leads overheating. We are in Illinois still but couldnt go any further today. Can anyone tell me what this needle seat is? It looks kinda like a long needle seat for a float.
