So we might end up with a new flag. Why does this matter? Does this *actually* affect us? Supposedly, its important because it affects our identities as New Zealanders. But how is surrendering authority over our self-presentation to a rectangular sheet of fabric any way of asserting our identity? Lets say you vote in a referendum to switch to a flag which you feel represents you somewhat better than the last. What does this say about YOU? Youve voluntarily participated in a process that subjugates your individuality and lumps you in with four and a half million other people who are likely all very different to you in big ways. It would probably be best for the emotional and moral health of New Zealanders if we simply refused to participate in meaningless, subjective, unwinnable arguments over which flag represents us best. But if we ARE to use taxpayer money to force a referendum on this supposed issue, then we ought to at least have the option to SCRAP the flag entirely, and replace it with NOTHING. We could become the worlds first flagless nation. I might even feel a rare moment of patriotism.
