So, we were standing in line in Safeway today (where most of my interesting moments happen) and Carson is looking behind us saying, mommy! What? (Meaning: mommy whats that?) So I turn around to see theres a black man standing behind us. And I realized that this is the first time Carson saw a black man. So I guess I could have just ignored an opportunity, but I took it. The man completely realized what was going on, and he was laughing about it. So I asked him, Im sorry but do you mind if I explain this to him? Go right ahead! He said. I put my hand next to the black mans hand and said, look Carson! See how mommy is white? And the man is black? And that is the only thing thats different (I wasnt about to get into gender detail). We are both people, see? But we just have different color skins. But everything else is the same and there are lots of people with different color skins than us. But were all people. And Im not sure what, if anything, Carson understood about that. But I did feel like ignoring it and telling him not to stare at people that look different from him would be wrong. Oh and Carson kept asking for the black man in the car on the way home, so maybe something sunk in.
