So what do you all think about the movie Lucy? Saw it over the weekend and thought it was a great action movie with a very unique premise: Humans appear to only use 10% of their brain, what would happen if you could use more? The Johnny Depp movie Transcendence from earlier this year covered some similar things, and I found both very interesting. Lucy has been slammed in reviews for using fake science for its premise. To those people I say: 1) This is fictional entertainment 2) Have a read of this tidbit from the Scientific American website: ...Whats not understood is how clusters of neurons from the diverse regions of the brain collaborate to form consciousness. So far, theres no evidence that there is one site for consciousness, which leads experts to believe that it is truly a collective neural effort. Another mystery hidden within our crinkled cortices is that out of all the brains cells, only 10 percent are neurons; the other 90 percent are glial cells, which encapsulate and support neurons, but whose function remains largely unknown. Ultimately, its not that we use 10 percent of our brains, merely that we only understand about 10 percent of how it functions.
