So what does it really mean to listen to your instincts as a homeschooling mom?(We talk about this a lot on Mentoring Moms on Tuesdays) Ive been at this for 20 years, so I thought it might be helpful to give an example of what that might look like: Our 14 yr old (8th grade) asked if he could skip math today. I told him that would be fine and heres why: he normally works really hard on his math lessons(so this was the exception not the rule) AND he was fighting a bit of a headache. He still had all of his other subjects to do so he moved onto language. He was studying similes, metaphors and implied metaphors. I had to look up the answers to get a feel for what they were asking for because I couldnt remember exactly what those terms meant either. He made an effort, but the reality was that it was NOT going to be absorbed. I allowed him to move onto the next part of the lesson because I know 2 things: he may not be ready to retain this information, but he has now been exposed to the terms and their meaning (and often exposure is the only real lesson that needs to be happening, especially before high school) AND he honestly doesnt need to remember this in order to be a successful, contributing member of society. I also know there will be days he will absorb 100 times more than today. One of the best ways to keep from stressing out is to try and keep the BIG picture in mind-Durenda (Admin) Wife to One, Mom to Eight
