So, what is sentience? How shall it be defined, if all living organisms are anticipatory systems? How shall we divide the category of living organisms into sentient and non-sentient? Most people, including Buddhists, assume that plants are non-sentient life forms. So where does this plant fit in? Dodder, also known as Cuscuta, is a parasitic vine that has no leaves and most varieties have no chlorophyl either. That means they have to sink their fangs (haustoria; root-like structures) into the body of another plant-- one that CAN photosynthesize. Just like predatory animals, predatory plants have advanced senses and capacities that help them locate or lure their prey. I dont pretend to know if thats sentience but I do think its obvious that Anticipation, generally speaking, is the seed from which sentience sprang. sciencechannel/tv-shows/through-the-wormhole/videos/cuscuta-parasite.htm
