So what was my greatest angling adventure of 2014? I think it has to be George Woodwards welsh record porbeagle shark which is possibly the UKs angling moment of the year as well? During spring I often share a boat with George in pursuit of the Wyes salmon and during one trip he told me an ambition was to catch a shark. Fortunately I not only know Andrew Alsop of Whitewater fame but had a trip booked in June. So alongside Wayne Little and Paul Janaway we headed to the Celtic Deeps for a 2 day trip. At this stage George was unsure of his sea legs but a calm first day and a blue shark put him at ease which was a good job as unbeknown to any of us a monster was heading in his direction. Shark fishing is a team event where firstly the skipper plays a huge part and he did on this occasion picking our destination for day 2. Secondly its not a cheap hobby and with none of us rich men sacrifices elsewhere have to be made. Then we draw to see who has the first shark but this doesnt mean any less effort by anyone even if on a slow day coming out 4th could mean not having a fish. Fortunately it was a porbeagle bonanza with all of us getting in on the action including a momentous moment for Paul who joined a elite band of anglers to have 4 UK sea species over 100lbs. However George soon took his coat off when a 300lb beast attacked the bait and started to tow him around. An incredible creature that I will never forget which we all celebrated as if it was our own. 70 year old George however had his name on it and I believe for the next month toured around his local pubs telling the tale of the one that didnt get away!!!!!
