So what were YOU doing 60 years ago? From my 1955 diary, this entry for January 15th, : It snowed. We only got about 2 inches. I rode up to Bernardston. It was very cold. The girls are painting the tack room. The colors are brown (the walls) and red. So I was 13, and my horse was Bonfire. From the Stoneleigh Prospect Hill School campus, through the woods (where I-91 now runs), then up Swamp Rd to Bernardston from Greenfield, MA, would have been about 6-7 miles, each way, so a 12-14 mile ride. Id have been alone. My parents wouldnt have known where I was, since it was a Saturday, and Id have been turned loose until dark, typical for kids back then. Very cold probably meant about 10 degrees, because the previous days entry said 8 F. So different from 2015. Maybe it was good for us, if we made it through alive. My parents werent bad parents by the code of 1955, since all my friends would have had similar freedom.
