So whats new? The shift in a nutshell: - the economics 101 model was funded by colonialism and based on extractive process (oil) and iteratively gave us an economic model followiing the same genesis, a mixture of colonialism and extraction as per a nested colonialism wherein the labour of the workforce (as measured by profit) is extracted in a process that coerces the worker and generates design and goods that are IP patent protected channeling value creation up the hierarchy. The reason this is outdated/moded/and inherently destructive is that the result is social inequality, as described by Thomas Picketty (r>g: growth of returns on capital invested exceed the growth of national income...currently by about 700%), and in turn a fracturing of the cycle of job creation takes place in the boom bust cycle as investors accumulating massive wealth adopt policies of growth without consideration of consequence wherein investement targets maximum short term return rather than the longterm investments that create jobs...as described by Professor Christensen of Harvard. Calling it outmoded indicates that there is an alternative that works better and one key example here that seems to work at all levels is the recent move on the part of Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk to release/open source all of their patents. The automobile is the status symbol of the extractive age guzzling oil as fuel, and technologically developed by IP-patent protected process. By adapting a copyleft licensing strategy to hasten the transition to renewable energy while also increasing the research capacity of the company was a pivotal move in pervasive transition. The fruition of the alternative has yet to come though. With Kleiners Peer Production License and the ownership (r)evolution, horizontal and participatory organizational and decision making processes, and with the succession of the network to pole position ahead of corporation or state, we see a new dynamic of social self organization emerging. There is a ways to go, but the genie is out of the bottle so to speak.
