So when the tornado hit Lake George, my husband says Weve got to - TopicsExpress

So when the tornado hit Lake George, my husband says Weve got to go. I was unsure as to who the hell we were, but the next thing I know Im in the passenger seat of his cop car. (Remember, I am still a Post Certified Reserve Deputy). We went to Lake George at 110 mph, lights and sirens screaming. People werent pulling over to get out of his way, so he was swearing impressively and taking his half of the road right out of the middle. I am generally afraid to ride with him when hes going 65 in our Jeep, so 110 in his cop car was well outside of my comfort envelope. After we hit the hail storm, I just closed my eyes and prayed. The RV park in Lake George right next to the fire station was destroyed. We were assigned to go around the area on some of the county roads and check homes for damage. I got to wear a bright yellow rain slicker with Sheriff on the back. My job was to tie cop tape around something on the entrance to roads wed already checked, to let other cops know everything on that road was ok. I tied them in really pretty bows. A couple of times I got to say things to people (who assumed that because I was wearing an article of clothing that said Sheriff on it, I knew what I was talking about) like Yes, Mam, there was a tornado that touched down in Lake George. and No, Mam, you cant borrow my yellow rain slicker because it says Sheriff on the back of it and youre not near cool enough. Dan would not let me turn on the lights and siren, and he would not let me talk on the radio. I wanted to say things like Dammit, Jim, Im a postmistress not a meteorologist and Book em, Danno. But Ohhhhh Noooooo, Mr. Stick in the Mud wouldnt let me. The path of the tornado was clear. There was insulation from one of the homes that was damaged up to 2 miles from the home itself. I saw sheet metal from somebodys roof wrapped around power lines. There was a really fancy looking 5th wheel camper that was upside down. Trees thicker through the middle than I am were just snapped off. It was really amazing. Just got home a little bit ago. I am so grateful that nobody was hurt. But I am never going to ride in a car with my husband again. Ever. Oh, and they made me give back the yellow rain slicker.
